The rise and fall

Criado por Letícia Castro em em 14/07/2008
miss euaPure symbolism. What happened on the night of July 13, during the Miss Universe pageant was the repeated reflection of an era. For the second year in a row, Miss USA falls down on stage. She didn’t trip or anything, she actually fell down to the floor and rose from an awkward situation that could pretty much summarize what America itself has been through.

The USA just aren’t the same anymore. Having endured harsh periods of crisis before, such as the crash in 1929, the American
imperialism barely stands on its feet right now. Is it the most powerful nation yet with lunatic presidential candidates blaring away the eager will to invade Iran? Yes, it is, it’s still got lots of fire under the pants. But the world ‘s scenario ‘s not the same as in the past. With an internal crisis that makes the slavish citizens cut down on extra expenses, not to mention everyone’s personal debt, around US$ 8,000 per capita only on credit cards bills, the American society is shook up by economical unstability, unemployment rates and inflation. All that with no war in Germany in sight to profit on. Everybody else seems to be doing just well, in fact, in spite of the crisis effects.

As a little girl, I remember wishing to see the country’s demise at some point in my life. Being the subproduct of an imperialism was not by far the way I pictured the future of Brazil at all. Had it been 150 years ago, England would be the target. A thousand, Rome. But it was the 80′s and I hated the yankees to the guts. However, I never truly believed it could happen and I still doubt it . The signs of the time are plentiful, not that I root for it, as I certainly didn’t when, ten minutes earlier last night, I said, “will she fall down this year?”. I actually apologized to the TV and I swear, I had nothing to do with it. I even felt sorry for the girl, beautiful, but not worthy of the prize, which was conquered fairly enough by a latina.

Just a week ago, the Financial Times, the most prestigious newspaper on economy from the UK and Europe, stated that Brazil is on “the verge of superpower status”, “surfing a big wave of confidence”. It goes on and on, by saying that the country has been a magnet for foreign investments, as society changes. The FT also acknowledges the huge challenges our nation still faces, but the criticism couldn’t be more positive. As I see, during the years I live, America (kind of) falling apart, there’s a plus: Brazil can become the next empire. Is it even tangible? Do we want it at all? That I don’t believe I will actually see in my lifetime. In case it does come true, will we be any wiser?

    Vamos pra cima deles!!!
Motivo: quebra deste banco.
    Beijos e continue assim “amiguinha”!

    Oi minha filha

Complicada a situação.

There was an excellent article on the NYT about Brazil and its possibilities for the future last week.
But as you said: “Do we want it at all”? I even throw another question: Are we ready to stand up for it and face all the consequences?
Congrats (once again) for a superb post!

    Besos

    Vão superer a crise, claro.
E continuarão a mandar no mundo.

    Abcs,

    Letícia, dear!
Now I can write in a language that I master. Least, more than Italian.
Just loved how you could so perfectly link two things: Miss USA and the American economy. Both, falling down… lol.
Regarding your last questions, I don’t think I’ll see Brazil as an empire either. Maybe my kids or their, will. Though I so wanted to see it, Brazilians aren’t ready for that so we really need a lot of more time to ‘get used’ to this idea and improve in all ways possible ourselves 1st, then, someday, somehow… who knows!

Your post are simply the best!
    =)
